Pu’u Keka’a or Black Rock is on the north end of Ka'anapali Beach just south of Kahekili Beach Park aka Airport Beach. It is both majestic and of cultural significance.
In the not so distant "ancient times" of Maui Hawai'i, precontact, it was said to be a spiritual cliff where lost souls leapt into the afterlife. Leina a ka ‘uhane - Leap of the Souls is where the souls without their ‘aumakua or animal guardian spirit to guide them, would cling to the lava rock waiting to leap off the cliff into the spirit world.
King Kahekili was Maui's last ruling chief and considered the best at lele kawa - cliff jumping. Black Rock was considered his favorite leap.
Both Black Rock and Airport Beach have some of the finest snorkeling Maui with long sandy beaches. Black Rock can be tricky with waves, currents, and winds so more for the better swimmers. Airport Beach can be a little easier as most of the reef and fish are closer to the shoreline.
