Snorkeling on Maui with Disney's Moana

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

About 70% of our earth is covered by water, and much of it is still unexplored. Snorkeling gives one a hint of the abundant sea life nearshore in the living reef systems. Maui provides one of the best snorkeling experiences and there are many great snorkeling spots to explore.

A great option to being herded onto a crowded “cattlemaran” (catamaran snorkel tour boat) with 90 other people is to “Be Your Own Snorkel Guide” with the Maui Snorkeling Guide App.

Underwater tourism has become one of the fastest growing businesses, and the undersea world attracts people to explore the mysteries of the ocean. Travelers can join this tourism by many different methods, such as underwater restaurant, underwater hotel and underwater activity.

Snorkeling is one of the most common underwater activities and most people can go snorkeling with less equipment than other underwater activities. Needing only a mask, snorkel, and fins makes this an easy entry activity when visiting Maui, Hawaii.

Maui offers you some of the best chances for spotting spinner dolphins, humpback whales, and sea turtles. You can also see Spotted Eagle Rays, manta rays, sharks, Whale Sharks, Eels, Ulua, Ono, squirrel fish, Blue Stripe Snapper, Yellow Stripe Goatfish, He'emauli Day Octopus, Hawaiian Chub (Nenue), Hawaiian Dascyllus (‘Alo’ilo'i), Achilles Tang, Bird Wrasse, Black Triggerfish, Naso-Tang, Orangeband Surgeon Fish, Saddle Wrasse, Unicornfish Tang, Whitespotted Surgeonfish Tang, Yellow Tang, Rainbow Cleaner Wrasse, Pennant or Banner Fish (Kihi Kihi), PHEW!, That’s a lot of fish for one island’s coral reef systems.

Don’t forget the world famous Hawaiian State Fish the Humhumunukunukunukuapua'a Reef Triggerfish.

Maui, of the Hawaiian island chain, is the second largest island. The Hawaiian islands includes a series of coral atolls, the North-western Hawaiian Islands, and the eight main Hawaiian Islands which are Kahoolawe, Maui, Lanai, Kauai, Ni’haul, Oahu, Molokai, and Hawaii (the Big Island) with it’s active volcanoes.

Of course, unless you live under a rock, we’ve all seen Disney’s movie Moana inspired by Polynesian legends and culture. It incorporates a legend of a demi-god Maui and a lost at sea wahine (girl) and the adventure they go on together.

The movie is great for all audiences, it is about the dangers of what may lie beyond the unknown and choices that are made for the greater food of society. The writers and directors of Moana have made this movie about finding oneself, problems people have, the change of traditions, and friendship between two unlikely people. Moana, voice by Auli’i Cravalho, has always been drawn to the sea, partly because of the tales told by her grandma, voice by Rachel House, but also because it holds much mystery to her.

As is was inevitable, Moana finally gets the final push to go out into the mysterious sea on a mission that she had her heart set on completing. A legend told by her grandmother, the heart of Te Fiti.

Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, is the demi-god that Moana is destined to complete this mission with. He is a vital part of this mission because he is the one who stole the heart of Te Fiti a thousand years ago. The two do not get along at all half the time they are together, they often butted heads and teased one another, it was very entertaining and humorous to watch.

All in all Moana sets a good tone for the spirit of Aloha and it is still alive on Maui.

Aloha Nui Loa (with much love)
